EBRAINS welcomes Cineca as new associate member

Cineca Logo

The membership went into effect on 1 January 2023. It will give Cineca the opportunity to co-design future iterations of EBRAINS’ cutting-edge tools and services. These state-of-the-art capabilities – which cover data sharing, atlasing, modelling, simulation, high-performance computing, and neurorobotics – aim to help European researchers to address major challenges in brain health, benefiting from insights into data science, brain organization, and artificial intelligence gathered from the EU Flagship Human Brain Project.

Cineca, established in 1969, is a not-for-profit consortium of more than 110 members. It is the Italian national supercomputing facility, one of the largest in Europe; its HPC infrastructure is equipped with cutting-edge technology, and its highly qualified personnel cooperate with researchers and customers for the most effective exploitation of the HPC systems, in both the academic and industrial fields. Cineca has hosted and managed state-of-the-art HPC infrastructures for decades, for the benefit of the Italian and of the European scientific-academic and industrial communities. Its most recent acquisition is the EuroHPC JU’s Leonardo supercomputer. Currently Cineca is managing 4 Tier-0 systems (at position 4, 13, 24, 48 of the Top500 supercomputer list of November 2022) and several Tier-1 clusters. Cineca will also host one of the first EuroHPC quantum computers in Europe and it will manage the new Tier-1 HPC clusters for the Italian National Center for HPC. The mission of Cineca’s HPC Department is to accelerate scientific discovery by providing HPC resources, data management and storage systems and tools, HPC services and expertise at large, aiming to develop and promote technical and scientific advances related to high-performance computing for the Italian and European research community.

We are honored and keen to join EBRAINS and have the opportunity to contribute to the development and implementation of new technological solutions to enable research into human brain physiology, functions and disease. We will strive to support the EBRAINS research infrastructure so that it can play a leadership role in Europe for the benefit of the neuroscience community and become an important player in the ESFRI world.

Sanzio Bassini
Head of Cineca’s HPC department

We're very happy to welcome Cineca as a new associate member at EBRAINS. The centre plays an integral role in the EBRAINS computing and storage services.

EBRAINS is a new digital research infrastructure (RI), created by the EU-funded Human Brain Project (HBP), to foster brain-related research and to help translate the latest scientific discoveries into innovation in medicine and industry, for the benefit of patients and society.

It draws on cutting-edge neuroscience and offers an extensive range of brain data sets, atlasesmodelling and simulation tools, easy access to high-performance computing resources and to robotics and neuromorphic platforms.

All academic researchers have open access to EBRAINS’ state-of-the art services. Industry researchers are also very welcome to use the platform under specific agreements. For more information about EBRAINS, please contact us at or visit

EBRAINS is listed on the ESFRI roadmap

About the Human Brain Project

The Human Brain Project (HBP) is the largest brain science project in Europe and stands among the biggest research projects ever funded by the European Union. It is one of the three FET Flagship Projects of the EU. At the interface of neuroscience and information technology, the HBP investigates the brain and its diseases with the help of highly advanced methods from computing, neuroinformatics and artificial intelligence and drives innovation in fields like brain-inspired computing and neurorobotics.
