EBRAINS welcomes Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas as new associate member

The membership went into effect on 1 February 2023. It will give CSIC the opportunity to co-design future iterations of EBRAINS’ cutting-edge tools and services. These state-of-the-art capabilities – which cover data sharing, atlasing, modelling, simulation, high-performance computing, and neurorobotics – aim to help European researchers to address major challenges in brain health, benefiting from insights into data science, brain organization, and artificial intelligence gathered from the EU Flagship Human Brain Project.

The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is the main agent responsible for implementing the Spanish System for Science, Technology and Innovation. It currently has 122 research institutes distributed throughout the national territory, with the exception of the Escuela Española de Historia y Arqueología in Rome (Italy). Of these 122 institutes, 51 are joint centres with other institutions, primarily universities.

CSIC’s main objective is to develop and promote research for the benefit of scientific and technological progress, and to be open to working jointly with both Spanish and foreign entities alike. It is the first Spanish organization by number of projects and economic return in the Framework Program of the European Union. CSIC is also responsible for 45% of all public-sector patent applications in Spain, and since 2004, it has created more than 40 technology-based companies.

EBRAINS integrates a series of services whose main function is to accelerate and deepen our knowledge of the brain. There is no doubt that this initiative represents a strategic advantage for CSIC, as it will allow several highly qualified laboratories to boost their research activity at national and international level.

Javier de Felipe
CSIC research professor at Cajal Institute (IC) and member of the Science and Infrastructure Board of the Human Brain Project (HBP)

We are very happy to welcome CSIC as an associate member. The institution is the largest of its kind in Spain, and brings with it over 80 years of experience in conducting and supporting multidisciplinary research and development. We share CSIC's core values of transparency, equality, and integrity in science, and are honoured to have the institution on board at EBRAINS.
