EBRAINS kicked off its programme this Friday with the satellite event “EBRAINS Research Infrastructure Symposium: addressing grand challenges in brain research”, which brought together experimental, clinical and computational neuroscientists. The symposium programme was structured around four sessions on Why, What, How and Where to integrate multi-resolution and multi-scale data for neuroscience research.

This is the first of a series of activities organised by the HBP and EBRAINS during the FENS Forum 2022.

Paweł Świeboda, CEO of EBRAINS and Director General of the Human Brain Project, welcomed the participants and talked about the challenges accepted by EBRAINS, which is now in its transition phase of transforming the HBP achievements into a digital infrastructure that gathers an extensive range of data and tools for brain-related research.

These challenges include the transition towards a sustainable research infrastructure, and serving a broad community while also enabling excellence in research.

He pointed out that the creation of this research infrastructure, now called EBRAINS, was already mentioned in the HBP’s original submission document. “This was from the beginning an objective of the Human Brain Project”, he said.

Świeboda also highlighted milestones reached by EBRAINS, including its integration into the European research infrastructure ecosystem.

Participants of the symposium had the opportunity to learn some of the solutions that are being implemented by EBRAINS. The programme included an overview of EBRAINS atlases, tools and workflow, besides a presentation on how models and simulations can be used in the research infrastructure.

During the day, there were hands-on sessions on EBRAINS Data Services, Analytic Services, Simulation, Databases and data processing.

The FENS Forum is organised by the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies.
